Preprints
A Preprint is a complete scientific manuscript deposited by the authors on a platform. It is published after being accepted by Acta Ortopédica Brasileira and simultaneously on the SciELO Preprints Platform "https://preprints.scielo.org/index.php/scielo/user/register". Preprints are freely accessible, allowing scientists to directly control the dissemination of their work within the global scientific community. In most cases, the same manuscript published as a preprint is also submitted for peer review in a journal. Thus, preprints (not validated through peer review) and journal publications (validated through peer review) function in parallel as complementary systems of scientific communication.
Depositing a manuscript on more than one preprint platform is not considered duplicate publication.
Since 2021, Acta Ortopédica Brasileira has accepted preprints and the use of open science platforms as a way to encourage communication among authors.
Peer Review Process
Peer Review
-
Following a comprehensive verification by the editorial office, manuscripts will be forwarded for evaluation by two independent reviewers with professional expertise and competence in the respective field. These reviewers will provide opinions regarding the potential acceptance of the manuscript. Manuscripts that lack scientific merit or do not align with the editorial policy of the journal will be rejected without the possibility of appeal. Reviewer comments will be returned to the authors for text modifications or justification for maintaining the original content, in cases where the manuscript is accepted with revisions. The evaluation criteria for manuscripts include: originality, relevant contribution to the field, appropriate methodology, clarity, and timeliness. Given the increasing number of submissions, manuscripts will also be assessed based on their relevance and contribution to the specific body of knowledge in the field. Therefore, manuscripts with sound methodology and coherent results may still be rejected if deemed of low relevance by the editors.
-
In line with Open Science communication practices, the journal now adopts in its editorial policy the inclusion, in the final published article, of the name(s) of the editor(s) responsible for the evaluation, as well as the possibility of opening the peer-review process, in agreement with the reviewer, through completion of the Open Science Compliance Form. (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1XZW1wp2q3brTnJ8nR444024eFUabNH6Z/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=101539461613388101782&rtpof=true&sd=true) Moreover, authors may agree to interact directly with the reviewers responsible for evaluating the manuscript when such an option is offered. Accepted manuscripts may undergo editorial revisions to improve clarity and readability, without altering the scientific content.
Review Process and Additional Information
All scientific contributions undergo the following stages of evaluation:
Editorial Office Screening
-
Desk Review: The editor will determine whether the manuscript proceeds to the peer review stage.
-
Only manuscripts strictly adhering to the journal’s submission guidelines and accompanied by all required supplementary documents will be forwarded to peer reviewers.
-
Incomplete submissions lacking the required documentation will be archived.
-
Authors will have a 20-day deadline, starting from the date of notification, to submit the requested revisions. Failure to meet this deadline will result in the withdrawal of the manuscript from the review process.
-
No substantial or extensive changes will be accepted after the manuscript has been approved for publication, including during the final proof stage.
-
All communications will be conducted exclusively via the submission system and email.
-
Requests to Acta Ortopédica Brasileira made prior to article approval must be submitted through the SciELO Submission System. After approval, all correspondence must be directed to actaortopedicabrasileira@uol.com.br and no longer through the SciELO system.
-
The email subject line in messages to actaortopedicabrasileira@uol.com.br must not be altered, and unrelated matters should be addressed in a separate communication, indicating the appropriate topic and manuscript ID.
-
The final typeset version (in English) will be sent to the corresponding author, who must respond within 48 hours with minor corrections only. If no response is received within the specified timeframe, the typeset version will be considered final for publication, and no further changes will be accepted, unless an erratum is issued.
Open Data
Acta Ortopédica Brasileira encourages the sharing, citation, and referencing of all datasets, software codes, and other content underlying the article texts in order to promote research evaluation, reproducibility, preservation, and reuse of scientific content, available in open online repositories, such as CryptoDB (http://cryptodb.org/cryptodb) and FungiDB (http://fungidb.org/fungi), which are used in the Health Sciences field, or in the SciELO Data (AOB) platform (https://data.scielo.org/dataverse/braob) This information must be indicated in the manuscript. Consequently, articles reporting research must indicate and reference the availability of the underlying content used to develop the study and the results obtained.
Ethics Policy, Misconduct, Errata, and Retraction
Acta Ortopédica Brasileira publishes Errata and Retraction Notices depending on the circumstances and in accordance with the Guide to Best Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publishing.
Submission of a manuscript implies that the work described has not been previously published (except in the form of an abstract, a published lecture, or an academic thesis). All submitted manuscripts are initially screened for compliance with the journal’s editorial guidelines.
Conflict of Interest Policy
Authors are required to disclose any potential conflicts of interest. Conflicts may be personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial in nature. Conflicts of interest can arise when authors, reviewers, or editors have interests that may influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts. Upon submission, authors are responsible for identifying and disclosing any financial or other relevant conflicts that may have influenced their work, and must complete and sign the Conflict of Interest Disclosure Form. (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1p_bnS5rp4N2ysiCdeW576ToDfC3xBOsO/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=101539461613388101782&rtpof=true&sd=true)
For Reviewers and Editors:
Any conflicts of interest must be disclosed directly to the journal or to the Editor-in-Chief prior to undertaking the review process or making editorial decisions. Reviewers and editors must clearly state any relevant conflicts or confirm the absence of conflicts.
Use of Similarity Detection Software
Acta Ortopédica Brasileira employs Similarity Check (https://www.crossref.org/services/similarity-check/) to verify the originality of all manuscripts prior to publication. A manuscript is considered to exhibit significant similarity when the generated report shows extended passages (exceeding 30%) that indicate potential plagiarism. In cases where plagiarism is detected, the authors are notified and provided with the similarity report. If duplication is confirmed, the authors are contacted and the manuscript is rejected for publication.
Use of Software or Artificial Intelligence (AI) Resources
Acta Ortopédica Brasileira recommends the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) in its publication, ensuring research integrity, transparency, and excellence. Any use must be disclosed in the processes and aligned with ethical standards and best practices in research communication.
Thus, authors have the right and freedom to use tools and resources that assist in the preparation of the manuscript; however, only humans may be authors, according to the following norms and practices:
1. Inform/mention the sources of materials used in the research and in the writing of the article or chapter. Any use of, or content generated by, an AI application must be reported in the abstract and in the methods section or equivalent. 2. Ensure that all cited material is correctly attributed, including complete citations, and that the cited sources support the statements produced by the AI application, as it is not uncommon for AI to generate references to non-existent works. 3. Assume public responsibility for their work. 4. Concealing the use and content of AI is an ethical failure that violates the principles of transparency and honesty in research. 5. In cases where AI is used as a research tool, authors must discuss in the text its limitations and potential biases.
For more information, see the AI tools and resources guide – SciELO (https://wp.scielo.org/wp-content/uploads/Guia-de-uso-de-ferramentas-e-recursos-de-IA-20230914.pdf).
Sex and Gender Issues
The editorial team of Acta Ortopédica Brasileira, as well as the authors who publish in the journal, must always observe the guidelines on Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER) (https://www.equator-network.org/reporting-guidelines/sager-guidelines/). The SAGER guidelines comprise a set of recommendations that guide the reporting of information on sex and gender in study design, data analysis, and in the presentation and interpretation of findings. In addition, Acta Ortopédica Brasileira observes a policy of gender equity in the composition of its editorial board.
Ethics Committee
Bioethics of Human Experiments
Experiments involving human subjects must comply with the specific resolution of the Brazilian National Health Council (nº 196/96), including the signing of an Informed Consent Form and the protection of volunteer privacy. In experimental studies involving human participants, authors must indicate whether the procedures followed the ethical standards of the responsible institutional and/or national ethics committee, as well as the Declaration of Helsinki (1975, revised in 2008). Proof of ethics committee approval must be submitted by Plataforma Brasil, the national system for research ethics in Brazil. Studies conducted on human subjects must comply with ethical standards and obtain proper informed consent, in accordance with Resolution No. 466/2012 of the National Health Council (Ministry of Health, Brazil), which governs the Code of Ethics for Research Involving Human Beings. For authors outside Brazil, compliance with the Comittee on Publication Ethics (COPE). (https://publicationethics.org/)
Bioethics of Animal Experiments
All studies involving animal experimentation must be conducted in accordance with ethical principles established by Brazilian Federal Law No. 11.794/08 (http://www.planalto.gov.br/ccivil_03/_ato2007-2010/2008/lei/l11794.htm), which regulates the scientific use of animals and mandates submission of research protocols to institutional Animal Ethics Committees (CONCEA) https://www.gov.br/mcti/pt-br/composicao/conselhos/concea
and the Brazilian College of Animal Experimentation (COBEA).
